Whether in childhood, adolescence, or adulthood, we all constructed a way of being in the world to help orient to the unique set of circumstances in our environments. Often we created this way of life with the only tools that were within our reach, to feel some semblance of safety.
As we evolve, typically, the very strategies that served us well in the past begin to have the opposite effect. We might need to reexamine ourselves and explore new ways of approaching our lives and relationships. We can usher in a new chapter of growth in our lives by incorporating new tools into our inner toolbox. These tools usually involve connecting with ourselves in previously unfamiliar ways. The primary step is beginning to truly learn to understand what is happening in our psyche, body, and behavior. Naming or creating awareness around it can be the equivalent of learning a new language about our inner experiences. This skill opens up a whole new way of being in the world. Next, we can use this language and apply it to every aspect of our lives. This practice can ease our symptoms of feeling stuck and show us how to live beyond the many restrictions we created to help us survive.
Underneath it all is our “true nature,” a creative, authentic, and infinitely wise being, void of the layers of defense mechanisms and fantasies that we created to help us adapt to a confusing world.
